Drawin' the Movies:
A Fargo Comic
Maybe I should call this series "Panelbox'd"
November 23, 2024
In between working on a commission and taking care of the last bit of yard work before winter fully sets in (I'm so behind and theres so many leaves) I decided to make another one page movie comic. I had so much fun working on that Megazone 23 comic that I wanted to continue making more one page comics based on movies I had watched recently. Its a fun way to combine both the comic-making process and keep a diary of the movies I've watched without being so banal as something like Letterbox'd. I always find I'm pretty bad at recording my thoughts about movies. I often use the same phrases or talk about the same elements I'm really just repeating from other reviews I've read or, worse, seen. Then theres the dreaded star system. Are you the type of person who prefers a 5-star Letterbox'd system or a luddite who prefers the 10-star IMDB system (RIP their message boards). Truly what is the difference between a 6 or 7 star movie, or a 7 or 8 star movie? So making these little one page comics is a way to get away from that tedium and express something I can't quite put into my own words. So instead I take the words directly from the film, and collage my own visual narrative from screenshots.
These one page comics also format perfectly to a really concise foldout zine. I've been in need of some propaganda to leave around town and these little movie comics would be perfect. You can also sign up for my newsletter to opt-in for free art in your mailbox, where I'll be sending out postcards and foldout zines just like these movie comics bi-monthly to anyone who wants one. These foldout zines will also have a poster sized drawing on the back so you can hang it up in your bathroom or child's nursery or your office or wherever you think it would look good.
Also if you're interested in the process, I documented both inking and applying watercolors to this Fargo comic over on my YouTube.
